The Vine reviews ‘Sugar’ for Moldova

This is an incredibly catchy, absolutely bonkers, amazingly sassy bop. I just love the sheer sensuality this song radiates, both through its lyrics and through Natalia’s gorgeous voice. I love the verses, with the descending ‘talk, talk, talk’ motif, and the way the song subverts the formulaic verse-chorus-verse-chorus approach, playing with the various moments to maintain interest, whilst also keeping the transitions smooth and polished. I love the dance break in this, with the almost Gaga-esque instrumental- it’s incredibly catchy and an instant hit. Then there’s the pre-chorus where the vocals take centre stage, raising the tension and hooking me in before the whispered ‘sugar’- such a great moment, and it gets me excited every time I hear it. The bridge is very sassy, bringing new ideas to the table, and then there’s that final chorus. Natalia’s long note is impressive, but I feel the song relies on that too much- this song should have an outrageously loud and brash final chorus, yet it feels a little bit too safe. Still, that’s my one criticism- on the whole, I absolutely love this. Sassy, sexy, energetic and brash- this is the Moldova I love in Eurovision.

Prediction: I think this will qualify- it’s in the easier semi final for pop songs, and with an energetic staging, this should pick up plenty of televotes. Juries will probably like the current feel, as well. Still, if the staging fails to impress, this song may struggle to squeeze through, so Moldova will need to bring their A-game. If this gets to the final, I think it will do well with the Eastern countries, given the amount of promo this has had, and if it’s outrageous and sexy, it will pick up televotes. I’d predict 12-16.
