The Vine reviews ‘Fallen Angel’ for Norway

This is one of the cutest songs in this year’s competition, and every listen makes me fall in love with the song just a little bit more. I know people are calling this dated, and while it would fit comfortably in the line-ups of older Eurovisions, I think there’s something timeless to this song that endures and charms. Yes, the lyrics are cheesy, but they’re also adorably simple, showing Tix’s insecurities and disbelief in his lover’s reciprocity in such a relatable way. There’s no saccharine metaphors or brutal, deep statements- just an honest admittance of feelings, and that strikes a chord with me. The chorus is cute and easy on the ears, and it works well with the lyrics to create a sense of vulnerability whilst also being comforting. Yes, we can predict where the song’s going, and it doesn’t really venture too far to take risks, but given that Tix has already fallen and can’t fly, it makes sense that the song plays it safe. The key change, while raising the stakes, does seem a little sudden, but it makes for a nice end chorus to wrap everything up. However, as much as the song’s simplicity makes it, it also renders it somewhat forgettable and dated. But I think the song is adorable enough to hold its own- have I mentioned how cute this song is? I have a huge soft spot for it, and can’t not smile when it’s on.

Prediction:  I really want this to do well. And having seen the odds, I think this song is resonating with a lot of people, who yearn for sweet little songs that remind them of earlier contests. It’s different, and that will help it stand out. Denmark 2019 was a very simple, sweet song, and it did far better than anyone expected. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tix did the same, although the angel/devil staging may be a little bit much and put voters off. This is a borderline qualifier, though if it gets through, I would place it 12-16.
