The Vine reviews ‘Embers’ for the United Kingdom

Time for my home country’s entry! I really like this little banger- it’s fun, high energy and just all around a good time. I adore James’s voice in this- from those deliciously rich low notes to the chorus where he invites us to party with him. This song was clearly written for him (and by him) and he carries it very well. The instrumental in the verses is cheeky and fun from the get go, and the trumpets after the drop are sublime. Easily, the best moment of the song. Still, the pre-chorus builds very well, setting up tension and excitement nicely, and those long ascending notes hook us all in. However, I’m not sure about the transition into the chorus itself- we go from this exciting build up to a very sudden drop and it feels a bit empty and anticlimactic. Either the build needs to be longer and bigger to make the drop more deliberate, or the start of the chorus needs a little more support. Still, the transition from chorus to trumpets is full of fun and gets the party started! The bridge works well with the call and response, and then the dance break, and the energy is maintained throughout, but for the one transition. On the whole, this is a really good effort from the UK and easily our best song since 2009 in my opinion- yes, it’s a little repetitive and it isn’t perfect, but it’s fun, catchy, cheeky and energetic. I can’t wait to see it live.

Prediction: I really want this to do well- the BBC seem to have finally listened to what fans have been saying for years, getting BMG to manage the song and letting the artist have creative control, giving us a well-packaged, authentic, fun little number. However, there are just so many pop songs like this this year, and I worry we’ll be swallowed up by the bigger entries, especially as Malta is also using a lot of brass instruments. We need a big, fun staging that engages voters and juries if we want to pick up points- I’m hoping hoping hoping we get that. James truly deserves better than the bottom places. Still, I have to be realistic- I’m gonna say 15-20.
